Where Charitable Service and Justice Advocacy Walk Hand-in-Hand
The Service & Justice Commission is a standing committee of STM's Parish Pastoral Council.
This commission prayerfully researches and stays current on the social teachings of the Catholic Church and concerns involving the Corporal Works of Mercy in order to educate and motivate parishioners of all ages, ministries and activities in service to others within and beyond our STM faith community.
There are more than 25 Catholic and ecumenical ministries under S&J's current umbrella. Volunteers interested in learning about, seeing a need, and/or working hands on in charity, service and justice issues are welcome to serve a term of lay leadership.
We collaborate with Xavier Catholic School System and St. Thomas More's Discipleship Formation students on some projects, as well as the Parish Pastoral Council and other Commissions. We are always willing to add other needs to our list when we find willing hands to help.
Commitment: One meeting per month of about 90 minutes September through May.

Respect Life and Care of Creation ministers (volunteers) cherish the gift of life and are committed to educating attitudes and actions according to teachings of the Catholic Church that promote care for all of God's creation and human life from conception to grave.
Projects include environment protection awareness and activities, tree replanting project on St. Thomas More's grounds, collection of needed items for VIDA Inc. (formerly Mother & Unborn Baby Care), providing educational materials for parishioners on life issues (abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, suicide, war, immigration, environmental concerns, racism, etc.), publicizing local respect-life activities, encouraging participation concerning human-life issues legislation, and sponsoring a rose sale to celebrate Mother's Day in support of Vida, Inc.
Commitment: Volunteers may commit to monthly ministry meetings, a project or other time commitment based on their schedule.

Through our Service & Justice Commission, social and political issues and concerns are explored as part of the Bishops' call to Living Justice, Peace, and Human Development and the call to Faithful Citizenship, and ways to solve problems and advocate for justice are discerned. Issues and advocacy activities are planned and communicated to our STM community and we work jointly with parishes in the area on some projects. We believe that if one wants peace, one must work for justice.
In addition, STM is a covenant member of Bread for the World (global hunger and health legislative issues), and the Service & Justice Commission keeps current on local, state and national issues via our diocese, NAMI, E.S.T.H.E.R. and the Wisconsin Council of Catholic Bishops.
Commitment: Varies, single events to on-going research and projects.

A “gift that makes a difference” is a donation you make to an organization that serves people in need. You give the gift in honor of someone for whom you would buy a gift. For example, instead of buying a candle for a teacher or a sweater for your nephew, you can donate to Pillars or Habitat for Humanity.
Gifts may be ordered all year long to accommodate birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
If you have any questions, please email or call Karen Rickert at [email protected] or 920-915-5321.
